Located on a promontory with views up and down the river, Blackrock Castle was originally built in 1582 by the citizens of Cork as a watchtower and fort to guard the river entrance against pirates and other invaders. The tower was reconstructed in 1722 following a fire and today houses the CIT research observatory and the Cosmos at the Castle visitor attraction and a restaurant. You can get there by walking along the scenic riverside or by bus and foot.
